More Math in Manhattan – The Museum of Mathematics

This post is for you Kirsten 🙂

Opening next year in Manhattan, NY there is a math museum designed by Glen Whitney gearing up to show the world what math is really made up of. The Museum of Mathematics aims to open up the subject in a new light to visitors, dispelling any myths and misconceptions people have of it (ie – its boring, useless, ect. Really horrible things). Also, MoMath wants to encourage students interested in math to not be afraid to delve deeper into it as a career choice.

I’ve been to a ton of sciences museums in New York and Philly, but I have yet to see one exhibiting principles in math! I’m really excited to see what they are gonna do! Especially the visual aspects.

One example of a display MoMath will have is a large version Menger Sponge, cut open at an odd angle.  There visitors will see that although the Sponge has square cut outs on the outside, on the inside the cuts form holes in the shape of the Star of David.

Neat stuff 🙂
